Skincare Do's & Don’ts During Pregnancy
Everyone agrees Retinol is off limits, but there’s still a lot of confusion about how expectant mums can care for their skin – a skin which can feel alien – during this time.
According to Skin Specialist & Medical Aesthetician Bianca Estelle, the following active ingredients are safe to use during pregnancy.
Salicylic Acid
As long as its no more than 2%. This ingredient is a great one to reach for when experiencing a breakout and can be used up to twice a day.
Glycolic Acid
AHA’s - including Glycolic Acid - are naturally occurring, with various benefits such as regulating sebum in the pores and exfoliating the skin.
Azelaic Acid
Derived from wheat and Rye. It’s beneficial for acne, hyperpigmentation and rosacea.
Enzymes
Enzymes such as Papaya and pineapple are, safe and great for sensitive skins, as well as vegan friendly. An alternative to using AHA’S, enzyme can be used regularly.
PHAs
PHA’s are very similar to AHA and fruit acids, they work by exfoliating the skin and are totally safe to use during pregnancy. They have a larger molecular structure than AHA’S making them great for surface exfoliation on sensitive skins.
Of course, all good skincare regimes should include sunscreen and Bianca would also recommend a physical sunscreen, such as with Zinc, whilst pregnant. There’s no evidence to prove that chemical ingredients pass onto the unborn child, but according to Estelle, a ‘physical’ sunscreen is better both for us and the environment.
Finally, Bianca rates Shea Butter and Rosehip Oil for the prevention of stretchmarks and warns against certain essential oils, found in many botanical products. She also advises that for any expectant mums who are just started to use actives, that it’s wise to start gradually and with the lowest concentrations.
